Topini, Ribeiro Highlight Owls' Performance at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Graduate transfer Lucas Ribeiro broke a 40-year-old school record in the shot put while junior Alex Topini helped lead a 1-2-3 Rice finish in the 3000m to highlight the Owls performance Saturday at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
Ribeiro, from Belmont, Mass., broke Tim Vala's 1980 school record in the shot put with a winning toss on Saturday of 17.57m (57-7.00), eclipsing Vala's mark (17.52m) by just 1.25 inches. Ribeiro took over the top shot put ranking in Conference USA with the throw and climbed into the top-70 in the NCAA.
Topini ran a sensational final 600m to lead a 1-2-3 Rice finish in the 3000m. Topini won with a personal best time of 8:22.67 (7th in C-USA) while Hociel Landa (2nd-8:24.01) and Ace Castillo (3rd-8:26.32) also recorded personal best times for the Owls.
In addition to the school record in the shot put, the Owls also received other solid performances in the throwing events. Michael Yow (PR of 19.14m/62-9.50) and Nick Hicks (18.61m/61-0.75) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the weight throw. Joining Ribeiro in the shot put was Elian Ahmar (4th-15.98m), Chris Rivera (7th-15.22m) and Yow (9th-14.94m).
Other standout performances included freshman Elliot Metcalf in the mile (5th-4:09.85), who ran one of the better indoor miles in Rice history., while Alex Slinkman placed seventh (4.91m) in the pole vault.
The Owls will compete at the University of Houston's Howie Ryan Invitational next Friday, Feb. 14 in the team's final imeet prior to the Conference USA Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-23).
