Owls Drop Road Contest at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Rice Owls women's basketball team fell to the 49ers of Charlotte Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena, 62-51.
Senior guard Erica Ogwumike came up one rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Freshman Lauren Schwartz (9 points) and sophomore Jasmine Smith (8 points) also led the Owls scoring charge.
Rice (16-8, 11-2) won the battle of the boards (32-25) but managed to shoot just 29 percent from the field in the loss.
Charlotte (17-7, 8-5) was led in scoring by Octavia Jett-Wilson (15 points), who was one of six 49ers with seven or more points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Charlotte won the opening quarter, 12-7, behind a 9-2 run to close the period. Ogwumike scored four points and Sydne Wiggins made one of Rice two made three-pointers on the night to account for the Owls scoring.
Second Quarter
The 49ers outscored Rice 12-10 in the second quarter, limiting the Owls to 3-of-10 shooting from the field. Four different Owls made field goals in the period but the 49ers took a 24-17 lead at halftime.
Third Quarter
Rice came out of the locker room on fire, taking the lead with a 10-2 run capped by a Jasmine Smith three-point play with 7:13 remaining to go up 27-26. However, Charlotte managed to outscore the Owls 16-6 the rest of the quarter to open up a 42-33 advantage.
Fourth Quarter
The Owls tried to get to within striking distance late but were unable to get to within single digits as the 49ers won the quarter 20-18.
Up Next
The Owls will look to get back in the win column next week when they host the Mean Green of North Texas on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
