Series Finale Set For 1 PM Sunday
Two Owls With Two Hits: The Rice tandem of Trei Cruz and Bradley Gneiting both paced the team with two hits each in a five hit night. The Owls also had two players with two hits in both of the first two games of the season.
On The Mound: Three Owls saw action on the mound, and each had (or tied) a respective career-high in strikeouts. Sophomore starter Blake Brogdon registered a career-high three strikeouts in a career-long 5.2 innings of work. Junior right-hander Drake Greenwood tied a career high with four Ks in 2.1 innings. True freshman Garrett Zaskoda struck out a Texas hitter in the final frame, which was his Division I debut. The Rice trio scattered six hits, and was solid when Texas tried to start a rally. Rice pitchers buckled-down and allowed only two hits in the 12 at bats when a Longhorn runner was on base.
Close Call: Rice was close to getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gneiting attempted to score from first base on a two-out double to left by Daniel Hernandez, but the Longhorns made the relay to get the final out of the inning at home plate.
Series Finale: The final game of the weekend series is set for Sunday (Feb. 16). First pitch is set for 1 pm.
Boardwine On The Bump: Rice head coach Matt Bragga has tabbed junior right-hander Kel Bordwine as the Owls' Sunday starter. Bordwine came on strong in the second half of last season and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Silver Glove Series against crosstown foe Houston.
Kids Can Run The Bases On Sundays: One of the favorite traditions of Reckling Park returns after the conclusion of Sunday's game. Children will have a chance to run the bases.
