Saturday' Start Set For 5 PM At Reckling Park
Longhorns Overcome Early Rice Lead: Texas jumped on the scoreboard for a run in the top of the first inning, but Rice moved in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The Longhorns were able to end the Owls' threat and answered with three in the top of the third for a 5-2 advantage.
Offensive Newcomers Shine: A pair of newcomers in the batting order, Austin Bulman and Daniel Hernandez, recorded two-hits each in a seven-hit attack. Hernandez, an Austin native, also drove in a run and scored in his first game at the Division I level.
Also New On The Mound: Two of the three Rice pitchers who saw action on the mound were newcomers making their Division I debut and the third Owl, Josh Larzabal, made his first appearance in two years. Junior transfer Alex DeLeon started and struck out four in 4.0 innings of work. True freshman Cristian Cienfuegos scattered a run on two hits in 3.0 innings in his first collegiate outing. Larzabal fired 2.0 hitless frames without any runs after being sidelined for all of 2019.
Flashing The Leather: Senior Bradley Gneiting made sensational diving catch in the top of the first inning. Junior Trei Cruz had the fans in the palm of his hand by making a rocket throw to first to get a batter after a 360-degree spin on a hard ground ball up the middle.
On Deck: Game two of the weekend series is set for Saturday (Feb. 14) at 5 pm. Sunday's series finale is slated for 1 pm.
