Owls Race Past Mavs

Arlington, TX: The Rice women's tennis team evened their season record at 2-2 by racing past the UTA Mavs 6-1 at the UTSA Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Doubles: The Owls set the tone early by racing to take the doubles point while only dropping four games at the first two lines, improving to 2-2 in doubles points this season.
Singles: Rice maintained its momentum in singles by taking five of six first sets. Freshman Maria Budin picked up the Owls' second point of the day with a straight set win at the fifth line while only losing three games. Senior Priya Niezgoda followed shortly, needing only 14 games to produce the third point of the day. Anna Bowtell gave the Owls the clinch with her win on four. Linda Huang bounced back from a loss in the first set to force a deciding superset in her match, joining Victoria Smirnova and Diae El Jardi who dropped their second sets. Huang and El Jardi prevailed to provide the final two points of the day.
Up Next: The Owls will wrap up their road swing on Sunday when they face TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The Owls return to GRBTC the next weekend, hosting Texas Tech on February 8 and Sam Houston State on February 9. Both matches are set for noon first serves.
