Topini Wins 3000m at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON - Rice junior distance runner Alex Topini won the 3000m to highlight the Owls performance on day two of the Houston Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Topini recorded a time of 8:23.49, which ranks sixth in Conference USA this season. Fellow junior teammate Hociel Landa finished less than two seconds behind him to place second overall.
The Owls were also solid in the shot put, led by Lucas Ribeiro's throw of 16.54m, which placed him third among collegiate competitors while Elian Ahmar was fifth (16.47m).
Competing unattached, Rice freshman Grant Levesque was fourth in the heptathlon with a score of 5159 points. He won the pole vault on Saturday with a clearance of 5.00m and was second in the in the 60m hurdles (8.33).
The Owls will return to action next weekend when they travel to College Station for the Charlie Thomas Invitational, Feb. 7-8 at Texas A&M.
