Owls finish third overall
Senior Hociel Landa placed fourth overall in the 8k race with a time of 24:11.73, the highest individual finish by an Owl at the C-USA Championships since Marcel Hewamudalige was second (23:37) in 2005. In addition to Landa earning his fourth career all-conference nod, Matthew Murray (17th-25:05.22), Ace Castillo (18th-25:06.01), and Andrew Abikhaled (19th-25:06.98) were bunched together to collect Third Team All-Conference honors.
Rice also received strong performances from Travis Dowd (24th-25:19.28), Elliot Metcalf (28th-25:38.54), and Davis Thames (37th-26:05.87)
"It's tough to start and finish the season on a the same day," Rice head coach Jon Warren said. "While it would have been wonderful and beneficial to get a race in before today, I think the guys came through and ran exceptionally well, especially and obviously Hociel. That was a great, great performance by him and then the Rice pack that followed him almost pulled us to second place. It's always good to have all-conference performers and that recognition goes not only to Hociel, but to Matthew, Ace, and Andrew. This was a great team performance done in circumstances I hope we don't have to race in again!"
The Owls (82 points) placed third for a fourth straight season and completed a top-three finish for the 12th time in the last 16 years. Charlotte won the team title with 31 points followed by Middle Tennessee in second place at 74 points.
