Rice 7, Lamar 0
In Brief: The Rice women's tennis raced to a 7-0 win over the Lamar Cardinals on Sunday in their 2020 dual season opener at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Doubles: The Owls raced an early lead as Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova raced to a 6-0 win at the third position. Diae El Jardi and Maria Boudin followed with a 6-4 win at the second line to clinch the point and 37h ranked Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova rounded out the sweep with a 6-3 win at the first line.
Singles: Rice maintained its momentum in singles taking all six first sets, three of them without dropping a game. Bowtell quickly increased the Owls lead to 2-0 winning 6-0, 6-0 on court five to complete an unbeaten afternoon. Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova followed shortly after with straight set wins to provide the clinching points. Michaela Haet added the fifth point of the day with a win at the first position. Senior Priya Niezgoda shook off a slow start in her first set, winning the tiebreaker 7-1, then racing to a 6-0 win in the second set and freshman Maria Budin closed out the scoring with her first collegiate dual singles win.
Elizabeth Schmidt "Everyone was excited to get out there after having the match moved back a day. It was great to finally see the sun. We had a nice crowd, especially the students, which was really nice to see. I thought our team did a nice job handling the wind and took care of business. We had some tight matches with them (Lamar) last year. We were a little unsettled on a couple courts at the start, maybe a few nerves and getting used to the wind, but we did a really nice job settling in a playing some good tennis. We're excited to go to Raleigh next weekend to face North Carolina State. They are eighth in the country for a reason. We got to see them some last week in Orlando, they are a well-coached team and we're going to have our hands full, but they're going to have their hands full as well. I think we're in a good position. It's going to be a good early test for us. Our regional is really solid with Florida, who's won national titles in the past and Oklahoma, who is a program on the rise. I'm excited for our team to get out there and battle with NC State on Saturday."
