8th Ranked Wolfpack Outlast Owls

Raleigh, NC: The Rice women's tennis team battled 8th ranked NC State to the wire, but the Wolfpack outlasted the Owls 4-2 in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at NC State's J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday.
The Details
Doubles: The Wolfpack staked out an early lead by racing to wins on the first two courts, led by a 6-2 win at the first line by their top-ranked duo of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith.
Singles: Needing four wins in singles for the win and facing a lineup featuring three players ranked in the top 31 in the country, the Owls set the stage to accomplish that goal thanks to a strong start by freshman Maria Budin and junior Linda Huang at the fourth and sixth lines and a pair of first set tiebreak wins to take four of six first sets of singles. After NC State took wins at the first and third lines, Budin scored the Owls' first point with a straight set win on court six. Huang then shook off a second set loss as well as the loss of a 5-2 lead in the third set to win a tiebreaker to cut the margin to 3-2. Huang's tiebreak win was the Owls third of the match and Victoria Smirnova was bidding for a fourth tiebreak win in her march with the Wolfpack's 18th ranked Anna Rogers when NC State clinched the match with a win on court five.
Up Next: The Owls will be back on the courts in Raleigh on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. (central) when they face Oklahoma, who dropped an equally tense 4-3 decision to No. 21 Florida in the first match of the day.
