Owls Shoot for 6th Straight Win, Host Southern Miss
The Conference USA leading Rice Owls will look to remain unbeaten in league play when they host Southern Miss on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Owls have started 5-0 in the new year, winning those contests by an average of 17.8 points. Rice is 7-1 at home this season and haven't lost a C-USA home tilt since Mar. 1, 2018. USM enters Saturday coming off a 65-57 road victory at North Texas and are 2-2 on the road this season. The Owls won their lone meeting with the Lady Eagles last season, a 58-47 victory in Hattiesburg.
About Southern Miss
The Lady Eagles have won four of their last five games entering play on Saturday. During conference play the Lady Eagles have four players averaging double-digits in points, led by senior guard Shonte Hailes (17.0 ppg).
C-USA Dominance
The Owls have the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018, having won 24 straight league contests. Only UConn (141), Baylor (45) and FGCU (32) have won more consecutive conference games than the Owls. The 24 consecutive wins is also the longest conference winning streak in league history. The Owls went 16-0 in league play last year with a winning margin of 19.2 points per game. Rice finished the season as one of just seven teams undefeated in conference play across the nation. Only Houston (16-0; 2010-11) and UTEP (16-0; 2007-08) completed perfect C-USA seasons before Rice, neither of which won their respective conference tournaments.
Last Time Out
The Owls used a balanced scoring attack and a tenacious defense to record their fifth straight win and remain unbeaten in conference play with a 60-47 home victory over Louisiana Tech Thursday evening. Rice had six players record seven or more points, including double-digit scoring performances from sophomore guard Sydne Wiggins (12 points) and freshman guard Destiny Jackson (10 points).
Efficient on Offense
The Owls have shot 50 percent from the field or better in three straight games and four of their last five C-USA games with the lone exception being a 46 percent performance in their win over WKU. Since the turn of the calendar to January, the Owls are shooting 50.6 percent from the field as a team with Ogwumike (18.3 ppg), Schwartz (11.8 ppg), and Wiggins (10.4 ppg) all averaging double-figures in points.
