Throwers Lead Way at Indoor Opener

HOUSTON - Rice graduate transfer Lucas Ribeiro provided the first individual victory of the indoor season for the Owls at Friday's Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.
Ribeiro, from Dartmouth, notched his 15th career victory with a winning throw of 16.33m (53-07.00) on Friday, besting the efforts of fellow sophomore teammate and second place (16.03m) finisher Elian Ahmar. Earlier in the day, senior thrower Michael Yow placed second (17.78m) in the weight throw while sophomore Nick Hicks was third in the same event with a mark of 16.74m.
Other highlights from a small contingent of Rice competitors on Friday included a third place result by freshman Grant Levesque in the pole vault, who cleared 4.90m while competing unattached. Levesque also qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles, placing seventh overall with a time of 8.36.
The Owls will hit the track once again on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at the Houston Invitational, hosted again by the University of Houston at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
