HOUSTON – A total of 55 regular season games, including 30 at Reckling Park and two more in the greater Houston area, make up the Rice baseball program's 2020 schedule head coach Matt Bragga announced on Thursday (Oct. 3).
Rice opens the 2020 season on Feb. 14 with a three-game weekend home series against longtime rival Texas. The season-opening series is the first of 14 home games at Reckling Park through mid-March. In 2020 the Owls welcome Texas, Texas A&M, Houston, Houston Baptist, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese, Missouri State, Lamar, Prairie View, Sam Houston State and Texas State for non-conference home games. The Conference USA home slate includes Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, Old Dominion, Marshall and Western Kentucky.
Fans have a chance to get a sneak peek of the 2020 Owls in two Fall exhibitions, the first of which is scheduled for Oct. 4 at Reckling Park. Rice hosts Sam Houston State Friday beginning at 6 pm. Fans are encouraged to bring their own food and drink on Friday as concession stands will not be open for the exhibition. The second exhibition is the following week (Oct. 11) against Texas A&M in College Station.
Season ticket renewals can be accessed online at RiceOwls.com/MyAccount. New season tickets, single game information, as well as some special ticket packages and group options, will be available at a future date. The official start times for all games will be announced at a later date.
Some fun facts about Rice's 2020 baseball opponents are as follows.
- The 2020 season marks the fourth year for David Pierce to serve as the Texas head coach.
- The 15 true freshmen on the roster were ranked as the No. 12 signing class in the country.
- The Longhorns return a wealth of pitching experience, including the top four starters from a year ago.
- The Bearkats are under the direction of new head coach Jay Sirianni, who served the previous five seasons as the program's pitching coach.
- Southland Conference Hitter of the Year Colton Cowser returns for his sophomore season. He spent last summer as the youngest member of Team USA.
- In 2020 the Kats feature 21 newcomers joining a squad that has won back-to-back Southland Conference titles.
- In 2020 Rice travels to UC-Irvine. A year ago the Anteaters posted a 21-5 home record.
- Head coach Ben Orloff is in his second season with the program after winning 13-of-15 weekend series.
- Big West Pitcher of the Year Trenton Denholm went 9-4 with a 1.81 ERA and the nation's best WHIP (0.81).
- Steven Trout is in his first season as the head coach and seventh year with the program overall.
- Texas State won the 2019 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship.
- Last season the Bobcats were one of only four schools to have each of its three weekend starting pitchers drafted and sign pro.
- Missouri State baseball is under the direction of Keith Guttin, now entering his 38th year at the helm of the program.
- A year ago Dakota Kotowski was named a Freshman All-American after batting .288 with 11 home runs.
- The Bears' baseball team has played games in the state of Texas every season since 2001. The streak reaches 20-straight years in 2020.
- Matt Deggs was named the Louisiana baseball head coach last July.
- The Ragin' Cajuns roster features eight veteran seniors.
- Hayden Cantrelle (.309, 9 HR, 28 SB) and Brennan Breaux (.295, .426 OB%, 11 SB) pace the offensive attack.
- Head coach Todd Whitting has more than 300 career wins entering his 10th season as his alma mater.
- The Cougars return both Friday and Saturday starters in the LHP duo of Clay Aguilar and Lael Lockhart Jr.
- Houston returns five starters in the lineup, and a total of 20 lettermen overall.
- Texas Tech is currently one of only three schools to reach the College World Series in three of the last four years.
- A year ago the Red Raiders finished fourth in the nation.
- Rice baseball is making its first appearance in Lubbock since winning the 1999 NCAA Regional.

- A total of nine transfers and ten true freshmen have joined the A&M roster for the 2020 season.
- Jeff Waggoner is in his 13th season as the Marshall head baseball coach.
- Herd closer Michael Guerrero returns after leading the team with five saves.
- Keep an eye on incoming freshman Ryan Leitch, who represented Canada at the Under-18 World Cup.
- Justin Hill is entering his seventh year as the head coach at McNeese.
- A year ago the Cowboys beat both LSU and Houston (twice) in the regular season before sweeping their way to the Southland Conference Tournament title.
- Texas-born sluggers Nate Fisbeck (.304, 12 HR) and Clayton Rasbeary (.304, 10 HR) both return to the Cowboys' batting order in 2020.
- Head coach Auntwan Riggins, now in his fifth year, continues to build the program.
- DH Alex Martinez had a sensational freshman season in 2019, ranking among the SWAC leaders in batting average (.323), home runs (11) and RBI (58).
- Veteran RHP Kyle Smith returns to the mound after leading the Panthers in wins, starts, innings, strikeouts and WHIP.
- Florida International is under the direction of head coach Mervyl Melendez, now in his fourth year at the helm of the program.
- Versatile star Logan Allen earned First Team All-Conference last season after making 14 starts on the mound and 31 starts at first base.
- A total of five Golden Panthers were selected in the 2019 MLB Draft, but Tyler Myrick (RHP) elected not to sign professionally.
- Head coach Jared Moon enters his 15th season at the helm of his alma mater and is HBU's all-time winningest baseball coach with 381 career wins.
- The Huskies have eight starters returning in the batting order, including All-Southland Conference outfielder Brandon Bena.
- All-Southland Conference right-hander Kyle Gruller headlines the Huskies' pitching staff.

- The team returns two All-Conference USA selections in CF Parker Bates and reliever Jonathan Fincher.

- The Monarchs had a sensational second half of last season, including a 15-5 run over the final 20 C-USA games.
