Texas Rolls Past Rice

Owls host Baylor next Saturday
The Lede: Rice saw its hopes to rekindle the magic of a memorable night 25 years ago swept aside by a furious first half assault by Texas as the Longhorns downed the Owls 48-13 at NRG Stadium on Saturday night. The Owls honored the members of the 1994 SWC co-champions, who defeated Texas 19-17 in 1994, during the game, but unlike that night when the Owls defeated a 12th ranked Longhorn squad, the similarly ranked 2019 edition would not allow a repeat performance.
The Details: Texas scored on its first four possessions of the night while holding Rice to just 40 yards over the same stretch. The Longhorns drove 91 yards on their first possession of the third quarter to extend the lead to 38-0 before Rice responded with a pair of Aston Walter touchdown receptions, the firsts of his career. Walter led the Owls with 69 yards on the ground while Austin Trammell just missed recording his second career 100- yard receiving game, finishing with 97 yards.
Blazing a Path Behind the Line: Junior linebacker Blaze Alldredge led the Owls with eight tackles, five of them behind the line. He was credited with a total of 4.5 tackles for loss, a career-high, including the Owls first sack of the season. His 4.5 TFL were the most for an Owl since Zach Patt recorded five vs. FIU in 2014.
Aston in the Zone: After not scoring a touchdown in his first five seasons with the Owls, Aston Walter has reached the end zone three times in the last two games. He caught a pair of short touchdowns from Tom Stewart to provide all of the Owls' points.
The Notes:
Up Next: The Owls Septemberfest rolls on with the third consecutive game in Houston next Saturday and the second straight against an old SWC rival as the Owls host Baylor at 6 p.m. on September 21.
