The Lead
Wiley Green's pass to Jaeger Bull fell incomplete with 54 seconds left at the Army 15-yard line, and Rice dropped the 2019 season-opener at Army West Point, 14-7, Friday night from Michie Stadium.
The Story
After holding Army to just 31 yards in the first quarter, the Black Knights used a 16-play, 95-yard drive to score the first points of the game. Rice responded as Nahshon Ellerbe, getting his first extended playing time since 2017, went for a career-long 54-yard touchdown to tie the game. The game stayed that way until the fourth quarter, when Army went on an 18-play, 96-yard drive, capped off by Kelvin Hopkins, Jr.'s 17-yard touchdown pass to Kell Walker with 3:58 to play. Rice came back, driving 53 yards to the Army 26. However, Bull could not haul in the Green's pass and Army ran out the clock.
Good to be Back
After only getting four carries last year due to injury, Nahshon Ellerbe ran nine times for 103 yards. It was his second career 100-yard rushing game and his most since rushing for 153 yards against Southern Miss in 2017.
Next Up
Rice returns home for the first of four home games when it hosts Wake Forest, next Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
