Series Notes
• This is fourth meeting between the two schools in football and the first at Rice Stadium since the Owls downed the Deacons 33-17 thanks to 175 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns to open the 1990 season (9/1/90).
• The series is tied 1-1-1 with the tie coming in the first meeting of the two, 17-17 at Winston-Salem on 9/20/89.
• The two schools each scored in the first quarter and the game was tied 7-7 entering the fourth. Rice went in front 10-7 on a Sammy Hartman field, but Ricky Proehl put Wake back on top with a 13-yard TD reception. Donald Hollas scored from one yard out with 1:46 left to give Rice a 17-14 lead, but Wilson Hoyle kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired to tie the game.
• Rice has lost its last four vs. the ACC (56-24 at Wake Forest last season), 42-7 at Pitt in 2017, 55-7 at Florida State in 2006, 27-24 at Duke in 2003). The Owls last win vs. the ACC was a 15-13 win over Duke at
Rice Stadium in 2001. Rice is 8-16-2 all-time against current members of the ACC (6-12-1 vs. schools while they were members of the conference).
Home Openers
Rice is 67-38-1 all-time in home openers, including a 31-28 win over Prairie View in Mike Bloomgren's head coaching debut in 2018. Rice is looking for its second straight win in its home opener.
Milestones
In addition to joining all of college football in celebrating the sport's 150th birthday, Rice will also celebrate several other milestones in 2019. This season will be the 70th in Rice Stadium and the Owls game with Marshall on November 2 will be the 100th Homecoming at Rice. The Owls will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of their earning a share of the Southwest Conference title and win over Texas when the Owls host the Longhorns at NRG Stadium on September 14.
Friday Night Lights
This is the Owls sixth time playing on Friday night, with the Owls holding a 1-4 record. The Owls lone win on Friday night came on last time they opened a season on Friday, a 56-27 win over SMU in 2008.
Unexpected Return
The Owls offensive attack against Army was sparked by the return of running back Nahshon Ellerbe, who rushed for 103 yards on just nine carrries (11.4 average) and scored on a 54-yard run, the longest of his career. Ellerbe began training camp in limited action while he was recuperating from a second knee surgery and had not been expected back before the middle of the season, but was cleared for full action in the later stages of camp. He was first injured in the final game of the 2017 season, two weeks after rushing for a career-best 159 yards vs. Southern Miss and saw only limited action on special teams after his return last fall. He underwent a second surgery on the knee after the season which put is 2019 availability in question.
Debuts
10 players saw their first action at the collegiate level last Friday night. Seven were true freshmen (Jake Bailey, Adrian Bickham, Jack Bradley, De'Braylon Carroll, Tre'shon Devones, E.J. Lahlou and Joshua Landrum), two were redshirt freshmen (August Pitre III and Cameron Valentine) and one was a redshirt sophomore (Jonathan Sanchez). Landrum and Devones made their debuts on the Owls kickoff coverage team and combined on a tackle on their first play.
