COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters the 2019 campaign with a career record of 288-188-55. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program. Coach Lee's video preview is available at the above link.
THE RICE-ALABAMA SERIES: Alabama leads the soccer series with Rice 2-1-0. The Crimson Tide claimed a 5-1 win in Tuscaloosa, Ala., last season. Prior to that the teams have not played since the Owls claimed a 1-0 victory in Houston in 2003. Rice and Alabama met for the first time in 2002 where the Crimson Tide won a 2-0 decision in Tuscaloosa. With Dicky Maegle's run in the 1954 Cotton Bowl as a teaching moment, the Owls have long stayed clear of the Crimson Tide sideline!
HAIL SENIORS!: Four Rice players have scored the team's five goals – all of them seniors. Owl veterans Haley Kostyshyn, Louise Stephens, Lianne Mananquil and Erin Mikeska have led the Blue & Gray to the back of the opposing net (with Mikeska scoring twice against Houston last Sunday).
DID YOU KNOW?: Rice is looking to duplicate its best start to a season since beginning 2006 with a 3-0-0 record. The Owls began the 2007 campaign with a 2-0-1 ledger.
