Filip, Card-Childers Finish Top-10 at USATF Championships

Recent Rice graduates shine on big stage
DES MOINES, IA - Former Rice All-Americans Scott Filip and Charlie Card-Childers each placed in the top 10 in the decathlon at the United States Track & Field Outdoor Championships, completed on Friday at Drake Stadium.
Filip racked up 7993 points to place fifth overall while Card-Childers totaled 7499 points to finish in 10th place.
Filip, a former five-time All-American for the Owls, posted a lifetime best mark in the 100m (10.61-949 points) and a season-best time of 47.96 in the 400m (911 points) on Thursday, completing the day in second place with 4251 points. On Friday, Filip established season-best marks in the pole vault (4.80m/849 points) and discus (38.13m/627 points). In total, Filip posted three top-three finishes and fell just short of surpassing his 8094 point performance earlier this summer in Dallas.
Card-Childers, who just completed his senior season with the Owls and was a Second-Team All-American in the decathlon, posted a pair of top-three finishes including a third place result in the pole vault with a lifetime best clearance of 4.90m (880 points). On Thursday, Card-Childers placed second in the high jump (2.00m-803 points) and set a lifetime best mark in the shot put (13.59m/703 points).
