Rice Advances To Play Southern Miss Saturday Morning
BILOXI, Miss. – The Rice baseball team battled for a 6-3 victory over Marshall in an elimination game Friday afternoon at the Conference USA Championship in Biloxi, Miss.
Stayin' Alive: Rice has survived and advanced once again. The Owls still have at least one more game to play in the annual double-elimination tournament on Saturday (May 25). The Blue & Gray is scheduled to face Southern Miss at 9 a.m. at MGM Park in Biloxi. Rice would need to beat the Golden Eagles twice Saturday to advance to Sunday's one-game Championship Final.
Records: The Owls improved to 26-32 overall. Marshall is now 29-28.
No Walk-Off Déjà vu: Only a week ago Marshall completed a three-game sweep of Rice in the C-USA regular season, and did so with three consecutive walk-off wins. The Owls were the visiting team Friday in the tournament's neutral setting, but this time Rice held firm. Senior Kendal Jefferies fired 4.2 shutout innings in relief. Sophomore Trei Cruz ended the contest with a sensational defensive play from deep in the hole at short.
Upon Further Review: In the game Rice head coach Matt Bragga challenged a play that what was originally ruled as Rice getting caught stealing. When the umpires went to the video replay, however, that call was overturned. It was the second time in this tournament for Bragga to get a play overturned via the video replay. A the end of the game there was a video check of the Cruz play at short, but the umps upheld their original call and the game was over.
All-A-Bordwine: Sophomore right-hander Kel Bordwine started on the mound for the Owls. He posted a career-high four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of a no-decision.
Offense: Trei Cruz went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Bradley Gneiting had a double in a 1-for-3 day, but he also drew three walks on the way to scoring three of Owls' six runs. It was only the second time in the last 17 games for Rice to score at least six runs.
Walk This Way: Rice showed great discipline at the plate drawing 13 walks in the game. The total was just one off the team's 2019 season high.
Now Bring 'em In: For as good as the team was at getting runners on base, the Owls tied a season high by stranding 15 runners in the game. The Owls also stranded 15 runners on base earlier against Rhode Island, but that game back in the opening weekend of the season lasted 13 innings.
