Owls Next Play LA Tech Thursday At 9 AM
BILOXI, Miss. – For the fourth time in as many games the Rice baseball team was defeated as the opponent rallied for a win in its final at bat of the contest. On Wednesday, Southern Miss claimed a 6-4 win over the Owls in 10 innings in the opening round at the Conference USA Championship in Biloxi, Miss.
Records: The Owls are now 24-32 on the season. Southern Miss improved to 35-19 overall.
On Deck: Down but not out at the annual double-elimination tournament, Rice next plays Louisiana Tech on Thursday (May 23). First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
Home Run Tracker: Rice hit a home run in the game to give the Owls 49 for the year. Rice had already zoomed past its 2018 total of 35 home runs in just two-thirds of the at bats. The 49 homers are the program's third best mark in the last decade. The squad has been mashing the tater at a rate of just under one per game (0.875), or one per every 39.76 at bats. Both marks are the program's best percentages since 2010.
Power Numbers: Overall the squad's slugging percentage is higher this season (.410) than a year ago (.386). Rice also already has 16 triples which is the second best mark in the last 10 years. The squad also has 104 doubles which is second best in the last six years.
Déjà vu Again: Rice has dropped each of its last four games in walk-off fashion after getting swept in a three-game C-USA series at Marshall last weekend. Three of the four losses have been in extra innings (as Rice was designated as the visiting team in Wednesday's game).
Quality Start: Rice had a sound and solid start on the mound by junior Matt Canterino. The right-hander from Southlake, Texas, held No. 2 seed Southern Miss to just a run on three hits and two walks in 6.1 innings of work. He also recorded nine strikeouts despite playing in front of a big and rowdy contingent of Golden Eagle fans who made the short drive from Hattiesburg to Biloxi.
Canterino K Counter: With nine K's Wednesday Canterino has recorded 348 strikeouts in his collegiate career. He ranks seventh all time on the Owls' career strikeout list.
The Kid is A Rising Star at MGM: Not only did junior third baseman Braden Comeaux lead all players in the game with three base hits, he recorded his 21st multi-hit game of the season. Comeaux has shown he likes the taking cuts at Biloxi's MGM Park, the minor league home of the Milwaukee Brewer's AA affiliate. In five career games played at the facility, Comeaux is a combined 9-for-20 (.450) with three doubles, three walks and six runs scored.
