Saturday Series Finale Saturday At 10 A.M. Central Time
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – For the second time in as many days, the Marshall baseball team rallied for a win over the Rice Owls with a 4-3 final in 10 innings Friday afternoon at Kennedy Center YMCA Field in Huntington, W.Va.
Already In: Because of other Conference USA outcomes that concluded late Thursday evening Rice had already clinched a spot in next week's league tournament in Biloxi, Miss., before Friday's game began.
Records: The Owls are now 24-30 overall and 14-15 in C-USA play. Marshall improved to 27-26 on the season and 13-15 in conference.
Home Run Tracker: Rice hit two home runs Friday to give the Owls 47 for the year. Rice had already zoomed past its 2018 total of 35 home runs in just two-thirds of the at bats. The 47 homers are the program's third best mark in the last decade. The squad has been mashing the tater at a rate of just under one per game (0.870), the program's best percentage since 2010.
Power Numbers: Overall the squad's slugging percentage is higher this season (.411) than a year ago (.386). Rice also already has 16 triples which is the second best mark in the last 10 years. The squad also has 97 doubles which is second best in the last five years.
Bordwine Shines: The Owls had another gritty performance on the mound from starter Kel Bordwine. The sophomore right-hander worked a career long 7.0 innings where he allowed just one run on five hits and four walks. He also matched a career high with three strikeouts.
Unearned Run: Marshall scored an unearned run from first base in the bottom of the 10th inning when the Owls had trouble taking care of the baseball after a base hit. The miscue was magnified by the field conditions at the facility.
On Deck: The C-USA series concludes Saturday in Huntington, W.Va. Start time in the finale is set for 10 am Central Time.
