Owls collect 24 team points on day two
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Seven different Owls registered points for the Rice men's track and field team on day two of the C-USA Outdoor Championships Friday at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center. In total, Rice collected 24 team points and enters Saturday in third place.
The Owls began the day by collecting 10 points in the hammer throw with solid performances from Michael Yow (4th-59.28m), Nick Hicks (5th-57.71m), and Austin Weber (8th-52.91m).
Rice earned an additional 11 points in the decathlon, with Charlie Card-Childers (4th-6516 pts.), Corbett Fong (5th-6507 pts.), and Keegan O'Connor (7th-5571 pts.) finishing in that order. Card-Childers won both the javelin (61.41m-759 pts.) and discus (42.74m-720 pts.) while placing second in the 110m hurdles (15.29-815 pts.). Fong finished second in the javelin (55.30m) and fourth in the pole vault (4.00m).
To conclude the evening, sophomore distance runner Hociel Landa helped give the Owls an additional three points with a sixth place finish in the 10,000m. Landa's time (31:10.07) was better by four seconds (31:10.07) from his third place finish at last year's C-USA Outdoor Championships.
Due to incoming inclement weather, the schedule for day three of the C-USA Championships was adjusted. The first events of the day will begin with the women's discus and the men's long jump, scheduled for a 8 a.m. (CT) start. The first running event will be at 10 a.m. with the women's 1500m preliminary race.
