Owls Down Old Dominion Friday 3-1
3/29/2019 10:10:00 PM | Baseball
New Double-Header Set For Saturday At 1 PM Central Time
Records: The Owls improved to 10-18 overall and 2-5 in C-USA action with a second-straight league win. Old Dominion fell to 16-9 on the season and 1-6 in conference.
The K Train: Owl junior pitcher Matt Canterino registered 12 strikeouts to tie his career high, and did so working just 6.0 innings. There were three occasions (in the third, fourth and fifth innings) where the standout from Southlake, Texas, struck out batters to end Old Dominion threats after the Monarchs had runners reach third base – and two were particularly tight spots where ODU was batting with only one out. Prior to Friday Canterino had reached nine strikeouts in a game three times, but was just short of double-digits. He has now recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game nine times in his collegiate career.
Canterino's Career vs. ODU: In three career appearances against Old Dominion Canterino is a combined 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 21.0 total innings.
Out of the Bullpen: Where Canterino was having another great day, the game was still not finished after six innings. Senior Kendal Jefferies came up big with 3.0 solid innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just one base hit with no walks and had four strikeouts to earn his team leading third save of the season.
Two Big Blasts: Junior third baseman Braden Comeaux broke a 1-1 deadlock by leading off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run for his first round-tripper of the year. Sophomore catcher Justin Collins then gave the Owls some welcome breathing room by leading off the top of the eighth with his third homer of the year.
Leadoff Homers: The two leadoff home runs were Rice's seventh and eighth of the year. Each of the Owls' last three homers have been to start innings, including Andrew Dunlap's blast to start the fourth inning against UTSA last Saturday.
The 'Other' K Train: Where Canterino and Jefferies combined for 16 strikeouts to match a season high, the flip side Friday was that the Owls also struck out a season high total of 19 times on the offensive side.
New Twinbill Set For Saturday: There has been a change to the weekend schedule based on the expected weather forecast for Sunday (March 31). With Sunday's chance for rain in Norfolk area listed at 90 percent, a new double-header was scheduled for Saturday. Start time for game one of the DH is 1 pm Central Time with game two expected to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
