Freshman wins pole vault
AUSTIN, Texas - Rice freshman Natan Rivera (pole vault) and senior Charlie Card-Childers (decathlon) each established PR's in their respective events to highlight the Owls' efforts on day two of the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Friday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Rivera, from San Salvador, El Salvador, won his first career outdoor pole vault competition by clearing 5.35m (17-6.50) on his lone attempt, that coming after passing on 5.30m. Rivera, who was competing in Pit 2, moved into sixth place in the NCAA rankings and surged into first in Conference USA.
Card-Childers, a native of Houston, accumulated a personal record 7529 points in the decathlon to place third overall. Card-Childers set personal best marks in the 100m (11.19) and the 110m hurdles (15.05). On Friday he placed third in both the pole vault and the javelin.
