Meet wraps up on Saturday
Alex Dunbar closed the first full day of action at the 37th Victor Lopez Invitational in style, capturing the men's 10,000 meters and bettering his previous best by over two minutes, to highlight action for the host Rice Owls on Friday.
Dunbar won in 32:50.40, improving from a 12th place finish in the event in 2018 when he finished in 34:56.43. Adolfo Carvalho finished second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:23.30.
Sophomore Sage McAdams and freshman Ryann Helmers posted the top efforts for the Rice women by finishing second among collegiate entries in their respective events.
McAdams kicked past twins Loren and Natalie Goddard to finish second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 11:43.43, bettering her effort of 12:24.40 at the 2018 Lopez meet. Loren Goddard was third in 11:43.72 and Natalie Goddard fourth in 11:44.12.
Helmers made her collegiate outdoor debut by finishing third overall and second among collegians in the 5000 meters in 17:34.90.
In the men's hammer throw, Michael Yow and Nick Hicks finished third and fourth, with Hicks recorded a personal best with a throw of 56.75 on his final throw of the day.
Action resumes in both the collegiate and high school competitions at 11 a.m. with field events and a noon for the first running events.
