Game Two Of Weekend Series Set For 2 PM Saturday
The teams were locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel thru the first six frames. Rice's Matt Canterino had allowed just two singles and no walks in 6.0 innings of work and UTSA's Karan Patel surrendered only two hits and no walks with three strikeouts of his own.
Both teams plated runs in the seventh. UTSA strung together three hits, including a pair of triples, for a 3-0 lead. Rice bounced right back with two in the bottom of the inning. Justin Collins doubled in a run and scored on a triple by Cade Edwards. After the Roadrunners added a run in the ninth to go up 4-2, the Owls attempted to put together one last rally. Rice twice brought the potential winning run to the plate only to have UTSA hold on for a 4-2 final.
The Owl duo of Collins and Andrew Dunlap both had two hits on the night. Dunlap extended his hitting streak to a season-best seven games and is 9-for-18 in Rice's last five outings. Canterino meanwhile pitched a career-long 8.2 innings and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts. He did not walk any batters.
Rice is now 8-16 on the season and 0-4 in C-USA. UTSA moved to 10-12 overall and 2-2 in league play. Game two of the three-game weekend series is set for 2 pm Saturday at Reckling Park.
