Series Finale Vs. UTSA Set For 1 PM Sunday
The Roadrunners jumped on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first inning and proceeded to build an 8-0 advantage midway through the fourth. The Owls struck back for a run in the bottom of that inning with Andrew Dunlap's team leading sixth home run of the season. The blast was the 20th homer of Dunlap's career and extended his hitting streak to eight-straight games to match the best by an Owl this season.
UTSA knocked a solo home run in the top of the fifth and Rice answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Trei Cruz to score Dominic Cox. The Blue & Gray battled for one final run in the eighth as Dunlap dashed home on Cade Edwards' fly to left.
The Owl duo of Dunlap and Cox shared the team lead with two hits. Cox registered his second two-hit game of the season. Senior pitcher Blair Lewis threw 3.0 innings in relief allowing a run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. True freshman Dalton Wood fired the final 2.0 scoreless innings without allowing a base hit.
Rice fell to 8-17 on the season and 0-5 in C-USA. UTSA improved to 11-12 overall and 2-3 in conference. The finale of the three-game weekend series is set for 1 pm Sunday at Reckling Park.
