Ties single-season school record with 24th win
HOUSTON – The No. 24 ranked Rice Owls women's basketball team put the finishing touch on a season-long dominant performance at Tudor Fieldhouse by completing a perfect 13-0 home record with a 78-42 victory over Louisiana Tech Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
In the process, Rice (24-3, 15-0) won their 17th straight game overall and tied a single-season school record (2004-05 team) with their 24th victory of the season. The Owls entered the game as one of just eight undefeated teams at home this season and recorded just the second perfect home slate in school history, joining the 1997-98 Rice squad (11-0).
Saturday also marked the final home games for seniors Nicole Iademarco, Lauren Grigsby, Shani Rainey, and Olivia Ogwumike. The foursome, who was honored before the game, helped lead the Owls to the greatest three-year stretch in program history, which included 69 wins and the team's first-ever C-USA regular season title. The Rice fan base turned out in full force with 2,606 in attendance, the largest since Tudor Fieldhouse opened in 2008.
"I can't say enough about our senior class," Rice head coach Tina Langley said. "They've worked tirelessly and really devoted themselves to help make this a championship program. I'm proud of the way our team handled everything about today. I thought we came in and played a very good, well-coached LA Tech team and we executed and really played well together."
Iademarco relished the moment of playing her final home game on Saturday, tying her career-high with six made three-pointers, tied with five other Owls for the second-most made three-pointers in a game in program history. Erica Ogwumike matched Iademarco with a team-best 18 points while also securing 14 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season.
Senior Lauren Grigsby also scored in double-figures (12 points) in her final game at Tudor Fieldhouse while sophomore center Nancy Mulkey scored 11 points on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting.
The Owls, who recorded their largest margin of victory this season on Saturday, shot 53.8 percent from the field as a team marking the fifth time in the last six games they've shot 50 percent or better from the field.
Defensively the Owls held the Lady Techsters (14-14, 6-8) to their second-lowest shooting percentage (27.1) of the season while limiting Kierra Anthony (fourth-leading scorer in the nation) to a season-low six points on 3-of-15 shooting.
Rice will now look to attempt to become just third team in C-USA history to complete a 16-0 league schedule when they travel to UTSA on Mar. 7.
