Set single-season school record with 25th victory with 72-46 win at UTSA
SAN ANTONIO – The No. 24 ranked Rice Owls women's basketball team defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 72-46 in their Conference USA regular season finale Thursday evening, becoming just the third team in C-USA history to complete a 16-0 record in league play.
In the process, Rice (25-3, 16-0) won their 18th straight game overall and established a single-season school record with their 25th victory.
The Owls will enter next week's C-USA Tournament as the No. 1 seed and play the winner of (8) Southern Miss/(9) North Texas on Thursday, Mar. 14 at 11 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
Rice junior guard Erica Ogwumike and redshirt sophomore center Nancy Mulkey each scored a game-high 18 points against the Roadrunners, while senior Lauren Grigsby (4-of-8 shooting) added 11 points. Ogwumike made 7-of-13 shots from the field (3-of-4 at the free throw line) while securing a team-high eight rebounds. Mulkey shot 8-of-15 from the field and collected seven rebounds and five blocks.
The Owls won their 11th straight road contest, the second-longest in NCAA, by outshooting UTSA (7-21, 2-14) 48.3-27.9 percent from the field. Rice scored 40 of their 72 points in the paint and had a 15-8 advantage in second chance points.
Rice outscored UTSA 41-24 in the opening half and the lead climbed to as much as 29 points in the fourth quarter.
With the victory, Rice pulled even with Quinnipiac for the second-longest active win streak (18) in the nation and grabbed sole possession of the second-longest win streak in C-USA history.
