Will face WKU on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
FRISCO, Texas – The No. 24 Owls placed three players in double-figures and never trailed in a 61-43 victory over the North Texas Mean Green in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Women's Basketball Championship at The Star in Frisco. The Owls improved to 26-3 while expanding their school record winning streak to 19 consecutive games and will face WKU in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. CT on Thursday.
The Owls were able to advance by limiting North Texas (15-15) to just 29 percent shooting from floor and nine points in the final quarter.
"I'm proud of the way we defended today," Rice head coach Tina Langley said. "I thought we got better in the second half and executed our game plan better. Offensively, it took us a little bit to settle in but we remained patient and began to make the right reads later in the game."
Rice sophomore center Nancy Mulkey led the way for the Owls by scoring a game-high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting (6-of-6 at the free throw line) to go along with six blocks. The Cypress, Texas native now has 78 blocks on the season, trailing only Lauren Neaves (84; 2003-04) for the Rice single-season record.
Junior guard Erica Ogwumike, freshly crowned the C-USA Player of the Year on Wednesday, recorded her league-leading 17th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Cypress, Texas native went over the 1,500 point mark for her career during the fourth quarter (now with 1,504).
Sophomore guard Sydne Wiggins also reached double-figures with 10 points, making 4-of-6 shots from the field.
The Owls will be making their fourth appearance in the semifinals of the C-USA Championships and will be looking to earn a trip to the title game for the third time in school history and first since 2007.
