HOUSTON – The Rice baseball team jumped out to an early lead, had strong pitching performances, and played error-free in the field to defeat No. 12 ranked Baylor 6-3 at the Shriners College Classic Saturday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.

Playing as the visiting team in game two, Rice jumped on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore catcher Justin Collins drew his team-leading eighth walk of the young season and slugger Andrew Dunlap followed with a rocket home run shot to left for his second round-tripper of the year. The Blue & Gray stretched the margin to 5-0 with a run in the third and two more in the fourth.

Senior pitcher Evan Kravetz was in control and proved not to need any more support than that. The left-hander from Miami, Fla., worked a career-long 6.2 innings to earn his first win of the season. He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out nine. The nationally-ranked Bears continued to battle, and tried to stage a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kendal Jefferies came out of the bullpen and calmly ended that threat. He fired two more scoreless frames to earn the staff's first save.

Braden Comeaux collected a pair of hits in a game for the team-leading sixth time this season while extending his hitting streak to six games. Bradley Gneiting went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Rodrigio Duluc connected for his second homer of the season in the last three games. The Owls are now 4-7 on the season while Baylor dropped to 8-2.

The College Classic concludes Sunday. Rice next meets TCU in the event's finale scheduled for 7 pm.
