Rice Begins C-USA Bonus Play at UTEP

HOUSTON — Rice begins Conference USA's Bonus Play this Saturday, Feb. 23, when it travels to El Paso to face UTEP. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT and the game will be streamed live on CUSAtv.
Scouting Rice
• Rice is 10-17 overall and 5-9 in Conference USA. The Owls are looking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling at Florida Atlantic last Saturday, 60-41.
• Rice has four players averaging at least nine points, led by freshman guard Chris Mullins with 12.3 points. He also leads the team in steals with 1.3 per game while placing second with 2.5 assists.
• Junior guard Ako Adams is second on the team with 11.7 points per game. He is connecting on 39.9% from three, good for 10th in the league while leading the team with 2.7 assists per game. He also leads Conference USA in free throw percentage, connecting on 89.9% from the line.
• Junior forward Robert Martin is third on the team with 11.6 points and is second with 6.3 rebounds. He is connecting on 44.8% from the field and 40.8% from three, which is sixth in Conference USA.
• Graduate student Jack Williams is scoring 9.7 points while leading the squad with 7.9 rebounds, which is fifth in the league.
• Freshman guard Trey Murphy III is scoring 8.2 points per game and is fourth in C-USA in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 41.9%.
• The Owls are scoring 74.1 points but are allowing 78.1.
• Rice is connecting on 43.0% from the field and 34.5% from three. It is allowing its opponents to connect on 45.1% from the floor and 34.5% from three.
• The Owls are outrebounding their opponents, 38.0-to-36.2.
• Head coach Scott Pera is in his second season leading the Rice men's basketball program.
Scouting UTEP
• UTEP enters the game with an 8-17 record overall and is 3-11 in Conference USA. The Miners have lost two straight and five of their last six after falling at Southern Miss, 77-47, last Saturday.
• Sophomore guard Evan Gilyard leads UTEP with 14.3 points while connecting on a team-high 37.4% from three.
• Freshman guard Nigel Hawkins is second on the team with 13.0 points per game and is ninth in C-USA in free throw percentage (80.0%).
• Freshman forward Efe Odigie is one of just two players in Conference USA averaging a double-double. He is scoring 12.7 points per game while leading the league with 10.1 rebounds.
• Freshman guard Jordan Lathon is scoring 9.5 points while leading the team with 2.8 assists.
• UTEP is scoring just 64.8 points per game while allowing 69.2.
• The Miners are connecting on just 40.8% from the field and 32.2% from three while allowing 42.4% from the floor and 35.5% from three.
• UTEP is outrebounding its opponents, 37.0-to-35.2.
• Head coach Rodney Terry is in his first season at the helm of the UTEP men's basketball program where he owns an 8-17 (.320) record. In eight seasons as a head coach, Terry is 134-125 (.517).
