Owls Drop 6-1 Decision at Vanderbilt
2/17/2019 4:02:00 PM | Men's Tennis
The Lead: Jacob Eskeland won for the eighth time in 10 dual matches, but Rice dropped a 6-1 decision at Vanderbilt on Sunday at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center in Nashville.
Doubles: Conrad Russell and Sumit Sarkar picked up a 6-4 win at the first position to counter a win by Vanderbilt at third line. Jacob Eskeland and Daniel Warren stormed back from a 5-2 deficit to force a tiebreaker before falling 7-5.
Singles: Eskeland raced to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Vanderbilt's George Harwell to improve to 8-2 in dual singles this season, one win shy of his freshman total.
Efe Unstundag: "We had a shot to get the doubles point. We were two points from the clinch, but we had one bad error followed by one great serve by Vanderbilt that turned it against us. They took four first sets in singles. Jacob took care of business but Sumit has a tough call go against him in his tiebreak. It was the difference from going up 6-3 and having three set points to being 5-4. These were two tough matches indoors on the road, but we knew that going in. The road doesn't get any easier from here, but we've got to get back to work and find a way to grow from these challenges. We've yet to have a match where we've had it going on all six courts, but when it does, I think we have a chance to be a special team."
Up Next: The Owls will remain on the road next weekend when they travel to Montgomery, Alabama to make their third consecutive appearance in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic, February 22-23.
