Rice Rallies Past Rhode Island In 13 Innings

Series Finale Set For 11:30 a.m. Sunday
After a loss in 10 innings on Friday night, Rice battled to level the series 1-1 just as the contest went past the five-hour mark. Rhode Island broke a 5-5 deadlock in the top of the 13th with a run on two hits, a walk and a passed ball. In the bottom of the frame Owls Dominic Cox and Trei Cruz reached base with a HBP and single, respectively. The runners advanced around the stations as the Rams had trouble taking care of the ball with a fielding error, wild pitch and passed ball. The victory was the first at Rice for head coach Matt Bragga.
Rice right fielder Bradley Gneiting and Trei Cruz paced the offense by recording three hits each in the 13-hit attack. Braden Comeaux, Cade Edwards and Antonio Cruz all collected two hits.
Sophomore reliever Kel Bordwine was sound and solid working a career-long 3.0 innings before turning it over to Zach Esquivel in the top of the 13th. Even after what proved to be a long day of baseball the Owls will not forget the sensational start on the mound by left-hander Evan Kravetz. The senior from Miami, Fla., was electric registering a career-high 10 strikeouts in 5.0 scoreless frames to begin the game.
The three-game weekend series vs. Rhode Island concludes Sunday (Feb. 17) at Reckling Park. First pitch is slated for 11:30 am.
