Men’s Hoops Begins Three-Game Homestand against Houston Baptist

HOUSTON — Rice will play just its second game in three weeks when it begins a three-game homestand against crosstown foe Houston Baptist this Saturday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be livestreamed by CUSAtv.
Game Promotions
Get to the game early for the Kids Court Kickoff. Come take pictures with Santa and other local mascots, bounce around on inflatables, and shoot some hoops in Fox Gym. Kids Court is open to fans of all ages one hour prior to tip-off at every Saturday home men's and women's basketball game this season.
Scouting Rice
• Rice enters today's game with a 6-4 record. The Owls are coming off a 73-60 defeat at Lamar last Saturday.
• Sophomore Trey Murphy III leads the Owls with 13.3 points per game and 1.1 steals per game while placing fourth in rebounds (5.1).
• Senior Ako Adams is second on the team with 11.8 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. He is also fifth in Conference USA in three-pointers made per game (2.3) and seventh in free throw percentage (88.6%).
• Senior Robert Martin is third on the team with 10.7 points per game and second with 6.2 rebounds per game.
• Sophomore Drew Peterson is fourth on the team in scoring (10.7) and leads the team and is tied for seventh in C-USA with 6.7 rebounds per game. He's also leading the team with 2.9 assists.
• Freshman Max Fiedler is third on the team with 6.0 rebounds per game.
• Rice is averaging 71.0 points while allowing 72.6.
• The Owls are connecting on 41.4% from the floor and 34.2% from three while allowing their opponents to connect on 43.5% from the field but just 28.9% from three, which is second in the conference.
• Rice is being outrebounded by its opponents, 38.1-to-37.9 and is second in the conference in three-pointers made per game (9.5).
• Head coach Scott Pera is in his third season leading the Rice men's basketball program. He holds a record of 26-47.
Scouting Houston Baptist
• Houston Baptist enters Saturday night's contest with a 0-7 record. The Huskies are looking for their first win of the season after dropping their home opener to Samford, 113-90, last Saturday.
• Senior guard Jalon Gates leads the team and is third in the Southland Conference with 17.9 points. He is also second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (40.9%) and three-pointers made per game (3.9) and is ninth in field goal percentage (46.6%).
• Junior guard Ian DuBose is second on the team and 10th in the conference with 15.1 points per game. He is averaging a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game and is 10th in the league in free throw percentage, connecting on 72.7%.
• Houston Baptist is scoring 75.1 points per game but is allowing 101.9.
• The Huskies are connecting on 39.7% from the floor and 36.2% from three while its opponents are connecting on 54.1% from the floor and 42.6% from beyond the arc.
• HBU is pulling down 34.7 rebounds per game while its opponents are grabbing 43.9.
• Head coach Ron Cottrell is in his 29th season at the helm of the Houston Baptist men's basketball program where he owns a 487-414 (.541) record.
Rice-Houston Baptist Series History
• Rice and Houston Baptist will meet for the first time since 2016 and the 12th time overall.
• The Owls lead the series 8-3, but Houston Baptist has won three of the last four meetings.
• Eight of the 11 games have been at Tudor Fieldhouse, with Rice holding a 7-1 mark.
• Rice won the last meeting, a 90-77 victory at Tudor in 2016.
