Owls Cruise to 66-40 Victory Over Little Rock

HOUSTON – Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike totaled a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds to help lead the Owls to a start-to-finish 66-40 victory over Little Rock Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Owls (2-0) secured their 17th consecutive home victory by outshooting the Trojans form the field, 46%-35%, while also holding an advantage in points in the paint (44-18), fast break points (14-4) and bench scoring (16-4).
In addition to Ogwumike, Rice center Nancy Mulkey and freshman Lauren Schwartz scored eight points apiece while Jasmine Smith scored six points. Junior guard Sydne Wiggins helped lead the Owls defense with a career-high four steals and played a role in holding the Trojans to an 0-for-14 performance from three-point territory.
Rice also did damage at the charity stripe, converting 14-of-18 attempts (77.8%).

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls shot 61.5% from the field in the opening 10 minutes and were a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line, outscoring the Trojans 21-10. Rice scored 16 of their 21 points in the paint with Ogwumike and Smith tallying six points apiece. The Owls raced out to a 10-2 advantage in less than three minutes after a Smith steal led to a layup. Little Rock trimmed the deficit to 14-10 but the Owls closed the quarter on a 7-0 run.
Second Quarter
Rice won the period 15-9 behind nine points from Ogwumike, who scored four points at the free throw line and snagged six rebounds. The Owls shot 8-of-9 from the charity stripe in the quarter and held the Trojans to 28.6% shooting. Ogwumike closed the half in style by going on a personal 8-0 run over the final 1:29 to give Rice a 36-19 halftime lead.
Third Quarter
The Owls continued to extend their lead in the second half, grabbing a 56-34 lead at quarter's end. Despite Little Rock shooting 58 percent in the quarter, the Owls managed to outscore Little Rock 20-15 in the period behind eight more points from Ogwumike. As a team, the Owls scored 14 points in the paint in the quarter and committed just one turnover.
Fourth Quarter
Rice closed out the game with a 10-6 advantage in the final period as the lead grew to as much as 28 points.

The Owls hit the road for the first time this season, making a trip to Dallas to face former SWC for SMU (1-0) on Wednesday, Nov. 13 (7 p.m.).
