Owls Face Old SWC Foe SMU in Dallas
For a second straight year the Owls and Mustangs will meet on the hardwood this Wednesday. The Owls won last year's meeting in Houston, 66-52, a game marked the Rice debut for junior center Nancy Mulkey. In that contest the Owls held the Mustangs to 16 first half points and were led in scoring by Erica Ogwumike (18 points) and Mulkey (14 points). Rice will be making their first appearance at Moody Coliseum since the teams met on Jan. 20, 2014, a game which SMU won 73-51.
About the Mustangs
SMU returns three starters and seven total letterwinners from last season's squad. SMU finished 11-19 overall last season and 5-11 in The American. Reagan Bradley was named American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week after scoring a team-high 13 points with eight assists, six rebounds and five steals in SMU's season-opening 81-60 win over McNeese.
Last Time Out
Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike totaled a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds to help lead the Owls to a start-to-finish 66-40 victory over Little Rock Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls (2-0) secured their 17th consecutive home victory by outshooting the Trojans form the field, 46%-35%, while also holding an advantage in points in the paint (44-18), fast break points (14-4) and bench scoring (16-4).
The Road is Kind
Dating back to last season, the Owls currently have the nation's third-longest road winning streak (11 straight) as they head into Wednesday's contest vs. SMU.
Mulkey Hits 100
With two more swatted away shots last time out, Rice junior center Nancy Mulkey became just the fifth player in program history to reach the century mark in blocks.
Dominating Defense
The Owls have held 21 straight opponents below 70 points and 23 straight opponents below 45 percent shooting.
A Look Ahead
The Owls return to Houston for a highly anticipated showdown against No. 5 Texas A&M on Sunday, Nov. 17 on ESPN+.
