Owls Use Second Half Explosion to Cruise Past McNeese, 81-50

Five different Owls score in double-figures
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Behind a balanced scoring attack, the Rice women's basketball team entered the Thanksgiving break triumphantly with an 81-50 road victory at McNeese State Wednesday afternoon.
Rice (3-3) placed five players in double-figures, led by 12 points apiece from senior guard Erica Ogwumike and sophomore guard Haylee Swayze. Freshman guard Destiny Jackson (11 points), freshman wing Lauren Schwartz (10 points), and freshman forward India Bellamy (10 points) also scored in double-figures. Freshman guard Katelyn Crosthwait just missed out on joining the group with nine points off the bench.
After a slow start, the Owls rebounded in a big way by outscoring McNeese 69-31 from the second quarter on. Rice established season-highs in points, field goals made (30), field goal percentage (.492), three-pointers made (11), three-point percentage (.458), and steals (14) while committing a season-low 10 turnovers.
Rice's bench outscored the Cowgirls (1-5) by a 47-16 margin and the Owls doubled up McNeese in points in the paint, 36-18.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
McNeese jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the opening four minutes, which led to a Rice timeout. The Owls began to find their footing by outscoring the Cowgirls 10-5 the rest of the period to pull to within 19-12 at quarter's end. Swayze scored five points off the bench, including a three-pointer while also making a pair of free throws.
Second Quarter
The Owls carried that momentum into the second period, outscoring McNeese 21-8 to take a 33-27 halftime lead. Rice shot 47 percent (9-of-19) in the quarter while limiting the Cowgirls to just two made field goals. Ogwumike scored seven points in the quarter, including a three-point play on a fastbreak layup that gave the Owls the lead for good with 2:26 remaining.
Third Quarter
Rice kept the pedal to the metal coming out of the break, outscoring the Cowgirls 25-7 in the quarter by making 10-of-15 (67 percent) shots from the field while holding McNeese to just one made shot on 15 attempts. Bellamy poured in eight points on 3-of-4 attempts and was one of eight different Owls to register points in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Jackson and Swayze added seven points apiece in the final quarter as Rice continued their offensive excellence by shooting 8-of-13 from the field, including a 3-of-6 performance from behind the arc. The Owls outscored the Cowgirls 23-16 in the period.
