Owls Pay Visit to Stillwater Saturday
The Rice Owls women's basketball team will be looking to snap a mini two-game losing streak this Saturday when they travel to Stillwater, Okla. to face the Oklahoma St. Cowgirls. The two teams last played on Nov. 26, 2016 when OSU won 65-51. Rice is coming off a heartbreaking 62-61 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M with the Aggies winning in the final seconds at Tudor Fieldhouse while the Cowgirls recorded their fourth straight win on Tuesday against Idaho St.
About the Cowgirls
Oklahoma St. was picked to finish sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll. The Cowgirls rank Top-20 in the nation in several categories: blocked shots per game (7th-7.0), total blocked shots (9th-28), field goal percentage defense (11th-28.3), turnover margin (11th-10.25) and assist-turnover ratio (16th-1.49). Oklahoma St. has three players averaging double-figures in points, led by junior forward Vivian Gray (19.5 ppg). Junior forward Natasha Mack is averaging a double-double (14.8 points/12.8 rebounds) and is sixth in the NCAA in blocks per game (3.5).
Last Time Out
The Owls came up just short in a last second, 62-61 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M last Sunday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice held a 61-60 lead with under 10 seconds remaining but Texas A&M's Cierra Johnson had a putback with nine seconds left, which proved to be the winning field goal. The Owls were led in scoring by freshman Lauren Schwartz, who poured in a season-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds in 35 minutes of action. Rice junior guard Sydne Wiggins also scored in double-figures with 13 points, which included a 3-of-5 performance from three-point territory.
Shutdown Defense
The Owls have held 23 straight opponents below 70 points and 25 straight opponents below 45 percent shooting. Thru four games Rice is allowing opponents to score 51.0 points per game and shoot just 31.6 percent, both of which rank 25th in the NCAA. Last year's reigning NCAA shot blocker Nancy Mulkey has picked up where she left off last season and is currently the nation's leading shot blocker (20 blocks). Last season Rice ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 52.8 points per game on 35.0 percent shooting (ninth in the nation).
Not Bad for a Freshman
Wing Lauren Schwartz was selected the Conference USA Freshman of the Week following her stellar performance against No. 5 Texas A&M, the league office announced on Monday. Schwartz, from Union, Ky., poured in a season-high 19 points in 35 minutes against the Aggies in Rice's narrow 62-61 loss. The freshman came alive in the second half with 14 of her 19 points and finished the game making 5-of-12 shots from the field (2-of-4 from beyond the arc) and a 7-of-8 performance at the free throw line. Schwartz also contributed six rebounds, second-most on the Owls.
A Look Ahead
The Owls continue their road swing to McNeese State (1-3) on Wednesday, Nov. 27 before returning home to face Northern Arizona (1-1) after Thanksgiving on Saturday, Nov. 30.
