WXC: Owls Finish 11th at Chile Pepper Festival
10/5/2019 12:51:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Senior Khayla Patel finished 22nd among collegiate competitors out of 270 runners to pace the Rice Owls women's cross country team at the 31st annual Chile Pepper Festival, hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Patel set a cross country personal best time of 17:21 in the 5k race to help the Owls finish 11th in the 27-team field. The Owls were one of 83 teams in total that competed at Agri Park as the talented field was split into two heats.
"We showed great improvement today," Rice women's cross country head coach Jim Bevan said."Khayla and Ashley both made improvements from our first meet and Lourdes returned and is making big strides forward. Mary Claire also improved quite a bit. We're getting better and we're starting to get people back. It was a big, loaded race and it was great experience for our true freshman Rachel Shoemaker. One step at a time, but I'm very happy with our efforts and performances today."
Rice recorded a team total of 350 points, finishing behind Arkansas (24), Texas (90), West Virginia (100), Oklahoma St. (129), Tulsa (143), Western Colorado (178), Iowa Central CC (222), South Dakota (230), Arkansas State (323) and Baylor (329). The Owls defeated 16 teams at the meet, including UT-Arlington, Oklahoma, Texas State and North Texas.
In addition to Patel's performance, Rice was paced by Ashley Messineo (61st-18:03), Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (74th-18:18), Alyssa Balandran (90th-18:34-PB), Rachel Shoemaker (103rd-18:42-PB), Mary Claire Neal (107th-18:44) and Loren Goddard (137th-19:14).
The Owls will return to action on Oct. 19 when they split action at the Pre-National Invitational (Indiana St.) and the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. The Conference USA Championships will take place on Nov. 2 in Bowling Green, Ky.
