The Lede: Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova saw their hopes of reaching the doubles final at the ITA Texas Regional fall short after Smirnova had to retire in the second set due to illness on Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Complex in College Station.
The Details: Niezgoda and Smirnova took an early lead over host Texas A&M's Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith, the top seeds who were also ranked eighth in the preseason rankings. The Owls took the opening set 6-4, but were trailing 3-1 in the second when Smirnova had to retire. Niezgoda and Linda Huang each dropped their singles consolation semifinal matches to close out action for the Owls.
