Pair reach consolation singles semis
The Lede: Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova advanced to a doubles semifinal matchup with the tournament's top seeds to highlight action for Rice on the third day of the 2019 ITA Texas Regional Championships at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Complex on Saturday. Niezgoda also advanced to the singles consolation semifinals along with Linda Huang.
The Details: Niezgoda and Smirnova, who were tied for 39th in the Oracle ITA preseason doubles rankings, downed seventh seeds Fernanda Labrana and Tijana Spasojevic 8-5 to advance to meeting with host Texas A&M's Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The Aggie duo, who are the top seeds in the tourney and ranked eighth, defeated Rice's Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova 8-2 to advance. Niezgoda needed three set to advance to the regional consolation singles for the second straight year, while Huang outlasted Nidhi Surapaneni of North Texas to move on.
