Owls Set for Critical C-USA Road Trip
Two of the hottest teams in Conference USA will square off in Murfreesboro, TN on Thursday when the Owls (winners of 7 straight) face Middle Tennessee (winners of 6 straight) on ESPN+ at the Murphy Center. Rice is in the midst of their second seven-game win streak of the season and has won 13 of their last 14 games overall. The Owls are 5-0 in conference play for the first time in school history. The game will be a rematch of last year's C-USA quarterfinals in which Rice defeated the Lady Raiders for the first time in program history.
Rice then travels to Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday to face the C-USA preseason favorite UAB Blazers, who are receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. UAB defeated the Owls in last year's C-USA semifinals and have won 13 of 14 overall.
Last Time Out
The Owls remained unbeaten at home this season (8-0) and pushed their winning streak to seven straight with a 64-52 victory over the North Texas Mean Green last Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse. Erica Ogwumike recorded her eighth double-double (18 points/13 rebounds) of the season and Nancy Mulkey contributed 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 blocks.
Ogwumike made five field goals and shot 7-of-8 at the free throw line while playing a game-high 38 minutes. The Owls held North Texas to 31 percent shooting from the field, marking the fifth straight game Rice has held their opponents below 40 percent shooting.
Mulkey's Block Party
Since redshirt sophomore Nancy Mulkey made her Rice debut on Dec. 15 the Owls are 8-1 and allowing just 53.8 points per game on 34.2 percent shooting from the field. Mulkey leads all of C-USA with 29 blocks in just nine games. Her 3.2 blocks per game would rank fifth in the NCAA but doesn't meet the qualifying standard in games played yet. Mulkey has recorded at least three blocks in four games this season, including an 8-block performance at Incarnate Word on Dec. 29 to tie the single-game school record.
