Owls Tip-Off C-USA Action
The Rice Owls embark upon their Conference USA season beginning this Thursday, Jan. 3 when they travel to Southern Miss to face the Lady Eagles. Rice went 9-3 during the non-conference part of their schedule, marking a third straight season in which they won at least nine non-conference games under head coach Tina Langley. Southern Miss leads the all-time series over the Owls, 8-7, but the Owls have won two of the last three meetings. The Lady Eagles went 8-5 in non-conference action. Following their contest at Southern Miss, the Owls will play the last of five straight games away from Tudor Fieldhouse with an ESPN+ showdown at Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Jan. 5. The Lady Techsters lead the all-time series over Rice, 15-8, and have won four straight games in the series.
Last Time Out
The Owls closed out their non-conference portion of the schedule in winning style, defeating Incarnate Word 74-63 last Saturday at the McDermott Center. Redshirt sophomore center Nancy Mulkey led all players with a career-high 20 points, making 10-of-14 shots from the field to go along with seven rebounds. Mulkey was also a disruptive force on the defensive end, tying Lauren Neaves (2006) for the single-game school record with eight blocks. Freshman guard Haylee Swayze (14 points) and senior guard Lauren Grigsby (13 points) also scored in double-figures for the Owls.
Mulkey's Block Party
In her first four games as an Owl, redshirt sophomore center Nancy Mulkey has totaled 20 blocks and most recently tied the school record with eight blocks in the Owls' victory at Incarnate Word. Mulkey's 20 blocked shots already ranks third in C-USA despite having missed the first nine games of the season.
Iademarco Approaching 3-Point Record
Senior guard Nicole Iademarco enters play on Saturday with 157 career made three-pointers and trails only Maya Hawkins (164 three-pointers) for the Rice all-time leader in made trifectas. In addition, Iademarco is 70 points shy of 1,000 career point in her Rice career.
