Seven Rice runners place in top 20
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's cross country team kicked off the 2018 season in style by winning the 12-team, 43rd annual Norry Hersey Rice Invitational Friday evening at the Rice Intramural Fields.
Redshirt sophomore Clay Musial worked his way back into the top finishers with a fourth place (20:27) result while sophomores Hociel Landa (6th-20:30) and Alex Topini (9th-20:35) also placed in the top 10. Redshirt junior Adolfo Carvalho and redshirt senior Bradley Dohner finished 11th (20:49) and 12th (20:50), respectively, while redshirt junior Connor Meaux (15th-20:55) and redshirt freshman Andrew Abikhaled (19th-21:01) placed in the top 20.
"This is probably in the running for the world's slowest flat course," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "The grass is really thick, the ground is clay, there's not much bounce. Whatever the times are are only equatable to running on this course only. With that being said, it's a great cross country course because you have to run smart. It was an excellent day for us and a great way to start the year. Clay got out well, was smart and worked his way up the whole race. Adolfo was our fourth man and did the same thing. Hociel and Alex got right where they needed to be and held on the whole way while Brad and Connor probably had the best races they've ever had at this meet. Things look good going forward, this was a very exciting beginning."
Rice will next be in action on Sept. 29 when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to compete at the Greater Louisville Classic, hosted by Louisville.
