Landa top Owls finisher; places 22nd overall
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Rice Owls men's cross country team placed three runners in the top 60 of Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic to place 10th overall in the 29-team 8k race.
Rice sophomore Hociel Landa was the Owls top individual finisher, placing 22nd overall in a time of 24:32 with a pace of 4:55. Sophomore Alex Topini and senior Clay Musial crossed the finish line placing 40th (24:49) and 59th (25:06). Also scoring for the Owls were juniors Matthew Murray (83rd-25:25) and Connor Meaux (85th-25:27) while freshman Andrew Abikhaled (25:44) and senior Bradley Dohner (25:47) rounded out the Owls competitiors.
"Overall it was a good day for us," Rice men's cross country head coach Jon Warren said. "Hociel had a super race and Alex and Clay also did very well. Our top-five was rounded out by Matt and Connor, who both ran the best races they've ever run. This group had a pretty good showing besting some solid schools (Auburn, Mississippi St.) and finishing in the top 10. I think we made big strides forward and will get better as the season progresses. Our next race will focus on some more local opponents when we go to Texas A&M and we're looking forward to seeing what we can do."
North Central (IL) took home the title with 102 points, followed by Kentucky (2nd-110 points) and Belmont (3rd-117 points).
The Owls will compete in one final race before the Conference USA Championships (Oct. 27) by racing at the Arturo Barrios Invitational (hosted by Texas A&M) on Oct. 13.
