Rice was held to 262 yards
Rice could not get a consistent offense going as it was held to just 262 total yards to drop its Conference USA opener at Southern Miss, 40-22.
The Story
Southern Miss took an early 10-0 lead in the first seven minutes. However, Austin Walter answered with a 62-yard touchdown run, capped off by Jordan Myers' two-point conversion. USM then went 86 yards for a score. Aaron Cephus' first of two touchdown receptions made it a 17-15 game. But, Southern Miss scored 23 straight points to put the game away.
All-Purpose Austin
Austin Walter recorded 204 all-purpose yards, his fourth straight game with at least 150 all-purpose yards. He now has 3,294 all-purpose yards in his career to move into sixth-place in Rice history.

Rice closes its three-game road trip next week when it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face ACC foe Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m.
