Owls Open Strongly at Rice Invitational

The Rice women's tennis team captured five of six singles matches and all three doubles meetings on a rain-shortened first day of the Rice Fall Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Play will resume at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the remaining 10 singles matches that were postponed from Friday, followed by two rounds of doubles and a the second round of singles.
Transfer Linda Huang and true freshmen Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova picked up wins in singles and doubles in their Rice debuts. Huang, a sophomore transfer from Colorado who is ranked 105th in singles, defeated Sophie Gerits of Houston, 6-0, 7-5 and combined with Michaela Haet to defeat Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara, 6-2.
Anastasia Smirnova teamed with Priya Niezgoda to defeat Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Camile Townsend and Mariyav 6-2 in doubles and picked up a three-set win over Isidora Zivkovic of Sam Houston, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Victoria Smirnova downs Sam Houston's Karla De La Luz Montalvo, 6-0, 6-3 and combined with Anna Bowtell for a 6-3 win over Petra Barkovic and Emma Kaszas of Sam Houston.
Niezgoda and Bowtell also picked up wins in singles, with Niezgoda downing Luca Fabian of Alabama, 6-3, 6-2 and Bowtell dropping Sahaja Yamalapalli of Sam Houston, 6-0, 6-1.
