New Assistant Coach
Rice women's tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt announced on Thursday the addition of Colby Meeks as the Owls new assistant coach.
A native of San Angelo, Texas, Meeks returns to the state after serving as an assistant coach at New Mexico where he handled all matters of on-the-court coaching as well as scheduling and recruiting.
"I am thrilled to welcome Colby to the Rice Owl family," Schmidt said. "Colby is driven, passionate, confident, and knows what he wants. The experience he brings as both a player and a coach will be a tremendous asset to our program. And, I am confident he will be instrumental in carrying out a standard of excellence in developing our student-athletes both on and off the court. I'm excited about Colby coming back to his home state to join our team and am looking forward to working alongside him.
Meeks came to UNM from the Cameron University in Oklahoma where he served for nearly two years as a graduate assistant tennis coach for both the men's and women's programs in Lawton, Oklahoma. With Cameron he assisted in logistical planning of travel and recruiting, handled practice schedules and on-the-court coaching, strength programs and assisted with fundraising and facility management.
With Cameron he was honored by the ITA as the both the men's and women's ITA South Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and he helped Cameron advance to the Elite Eight on the men's side and to the regional qualifiers on the women's side.
He has also served as an assistant tennis professional at San Angelo Country Club and Wichita Falls Country Club.
Meeks played for Tyler Junior College before moving on to Midwestern State, where he advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals after helping his team to a Lone Star Conference championship. Meeks was named the Lone Star Newcomer of the Year and was All-Conference in doubles, moving up as high as No. 9 in the national rankings. At Tyler, he helped the team to an NJCAA National title, and an NJCAA runner-up finish.
