Seven Owls to Compete at NCAA West Prelims

HOUSTON - Entrants for the 2018 NCAA West Region Preliminary Championships were finalized on Thursday and Rice University track and field programs will send five men and two women to the meet in Sacramento, Calif., May 24-26.
Charlie Card-Childers (javelin), Erik Maher (javelin), Matthew Murray (1500m), Austin Riddle (hammer throw/discus) and Uche Ugwunze (hammer throw/shot put) have qualified for the men's meet while Michelle Fokam (triple jump/long jump) and Hannah Jackson will compete on the women's side.
Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The best 24 relay times also advanced to the NCAA Prelims. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West prelims will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 6-9.
There is no decathlon or heptathlon competition at the NCAA preliminary rounds. The top 24 decathlon and heptathlon marks, which includes Rice's Scott Filip (8th-Decathlon-7876 points), have earned an automatic berth to the NCAAs.
The 2018 NCAA West Region Preliminary begins Thursday, May 24, at 2:00 p.m. (CT) with the men's hammer throw and women's javelin.
