HOUSTON - The Rice Owls men's track & field team collected 105 team points to place fourth overall at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, highlighted by a Sunday victory in the javelin by senior Erik Maher.
The thrower from North Caldwell, N.J. won his first career C-USA title with a booming throw of 65.61m (215-03.00), winning the event on his final attempt. In the same event, junior Charlie Card-Childers set a huge PR with a throw of 63.18m (207-03) to finish fourth and earn five team points.
"We were hoping months ago when we met about the outdoor season that if we could get to 90 points that would be a heck of a performance for this conference," Rice men's T&F head coach Jon Warren said. "We surpassed that by a ton. There were plenty of instances where we outperformed what we were slated to do. Six out of 10 teams scored almost 100 points combined and we went over that. Everything kind of fell into place and our veterans really came through for us."
The Owls received a combined 14 points from the 1500m alone, highlighted by a third place all-conference performance (3:51.70) from Matthew Murray. Freshman Alex Topini placed fourth (3:52.02) in the event while Matt Calem finished sixth (3:53.30).
Competing in his first event of the season, freshman George Nyakwol earned key points for the Owls with a sixth place result in the triple jump, leaping 15.15m (49-08.50).
Others to score points for the Owls included Dane Stolsig (javelin, 7th, 57.07m), Uche Ugwunze (shot put, 6th, 16.45m), Jason Bugg (800m, 5th, 1:52.58) and Reagan Olguin (800m, 6th, 1:53.52).
